*Call to Worship:

Unison:  O Triune Lord of Life, as we gather in Your name, we seek no glory or praise to be given to us.  We seek only to praise and glorify Your name because of Your great Love and Faithfulness.

We are living stones built by your hand, Your Son’s sacrifice, and the Power of Your Holy Spirit to be sacred temple, a called-out people, declaring Your mighty and merciful acts and presence to the world.  Fill us with the power of that same Spirit now, Lord, so that we may raise Your name with a power, love and vision that speaks life and light into darkness, and destruction to all the idols of our own devising.

Make Your Word to inhabit and strengthen us, that we may always see and know You with new and faithful eyes, hearts and minds, seeking only and always to obey Your righteous commands, and proclaim Your redeeming grace to all people.

We ask all of this in the name of Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; One God, blessed now and forever more.  Amen.

*Hymn:             “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”        # 185

*Call To Confession:

*Prayer of Confession:

Unison:           Almighty God: in Christ Jesus you called us to be a faithful servant people, but we are rebellious and do not do what you command.  We are often silent when we should speak; useless when we should be useful.  We are lazy servants, timid and heartless, who turn neighbors away from Your love.  Have mercy on us, O God and Father.  And though we do not deserve it, we crave Your forgiveness and ask You to free us from our sin.  By the power of your Spirit, make us useful and faithful; through Jesus Christ our Lord.   Amen.

Sermon:  God is Ever-Faithful — Are We Faithful Ever?”

*Affirmation of Faith:              The Nicene Creed

Unison:  We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, begotten, not made of one Being with the Father; through Him all things were made.  For us people, and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.  For our sakes he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died and was buried.  On the third day He rose again in accordance to the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.  His kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father; and together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, and who has spoken by the Prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic, and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins; and look for the Resurrection of the dead, and life of the world to come.

Title:            “ God Is Ever-Faithful      Are We Faithful Ever? ”

Genesis 15:1 - 18

1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”  2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”  3 And Abram said, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”  4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”  5 And He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.”  Then He said to him,“So shall your offspring be.”  6 And he believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness.

7 And He said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”  8 But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” 9 He said to him, “Bring Me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”  10 And he brought Him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other.  But he did not cut the birds in half.  11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram.  And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.  13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years.  14 But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.  15 As for yourself, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.  16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”

17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.  18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates. . . .

Luke   13:31 - 35

31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Him, “Get away from here, for a Herod wants to kill You.”  32 And He said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.  33 Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’  34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!  How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!  35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see Me until you say,  ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Philippians   3:17 - 4:1

3:17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.  18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.  19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.  20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like His glorious body, by the power that enables Him even to subject all things to Himself.

4:1 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.
